The Ludbreg shrine is the destination of one of the oldest continuous pilgrimages in Croatia, established by the decree of Pope Leo X as early as 1513. Namely, the papal bull officially recognized and confirmed the miraculous appearance of Christ’s blood recorded a century earlier in the chapel of today’s Batthyany castle, and since then pilgrimages to the Ludbreg sanctuary have begun. The sanctuary is the starting point and unavoidable point of the international religious manifestation called Ludbreška Holy Sunday, which takes place every year at the end of August. Today, this manifestation is one of the largest, most joyful and lively celebrations in Croatia and includes numerous religious, cultural, economic and entertainment programs spread throughout the city, which on those days turns into a large area of ​​fun, socializing, smells and tastes for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who arrive from all over Europe.
